Alan Leather

It is with great regret that the club announces the sad passing of Alan Leather.

Alan had a long and distinguished football career.  Between 1947 and 1952 he played for Middlesex Youth, Tufnell Park and Enfield.  In1952 he was appointed secretary of the Northern Suburban Intermediate League a post he held until 1957 when he was appointed as Assistant Secretary of Tottenham Hotspur FC.  In 1966 he was asked by the Football Association to be the Liaison Officer for the World Cup and after the Tournament was Club Secretary at both Brighton and Coventry City.  In 1973 until 1991 he was Club Secretary at Crystal Palace FC and also Secretary of London Football Coaches Association from 1983 to 1987.  He was Secretary of Aldershot in 1991 and from 1992 until 1997 was Secretary of the South East Counties League.  In 1997 he was awarded the Football Association Long Service Medal and from 1990-2014 was Chairman of the World Cup (1966) Association.

Apart from his love of football, Alan was a keen cricketer playing for Southgate CC and was a Life Member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).  He was also a Member of the Friends of Arundel Castle C.C.

Alan was elected to the Middlesex Wanderers in 1977 and was the club’s Administration Secretary from 192 until 2000.  He was made Wanderer of the Year 2011.

The Annual Club Supper  held on Monday 5th January 2015 was a resounding success.  The Supper followed a lively, enthusiastic and productive committee meeting which set out the agenda for 2015.  This included supporting the Vets in their efforts to retain the Ryman League Vets Cup in the semi final against Kingstonian later this month, attendance at Queen’s Park Burns Night scheduled for 21st February, preparing for our tour to Scotland and pre-planning for a major overseas tour to Ghana in 2016.

Regrettably, our Guest Speaker Geoff Pike was unable to attend to due to a virulent flu bug, but he sent his sincere apologies and wished us all the best for a successful supper.  In his place Eddie McCluskey entertained the diners with stories from his 50 years in non league football.  Among the guests at the Supper was Monsignor Vladimir Felzmann Chief Executive Officer of the John Paul II Foundation for Sport, Les Gold, Director of Enfield Town FC, Ivan Spikin of Maidstone United and Dennis Koranteng from the Ghana FA.
